Most marijuana users are constantly on the lookout for a newer, even more ferocious cannabis strain than they are currently using. This is what “breeders” are trying to capitalize on, resulting in more and more cannabis strains being developed. But with so many names and varieties, it is becoming increasingly difficult to figure out which weed variety is the strongest. Therefore, in this blog we are going to talk about the strength of Dutch weed, the changes over the years and what the strongest weed in the Netherlands is.
How strong is Dutch weed?
The Netherlands of course has an image when it comes to cannabis, many foreigners see Dutch cannabis as the best and strongest cannabis available on the market. And what turns out? There is some truth in this. In fact, research by scientists at the University of Bath and King’s College in London shows that Dutch weed is richer in THC than weed from any other European country. For those who do not yet know what THC is, this is the abbreviation for tetrahydrocannabinol. This substance is also considered the main psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. THC binds to receptors in the brain, causing changes in the release of neurotransmitters. This is then going to lead to a “high” feeling. Not surprisingly, many foreign tourists come to the Netherlands for our cannabis that is rich in THC. But was our weed always so richly filled with THC?
Is the THC content in marijuana higher now than it used to be?
In the late 1990s, cannabis contained far less THC than it does today. So you can definitely say that today’s weed is stronger than it used to be. In 2004, we were at a peak in the Netherlands with an average of 20 percent THC in our weed. This has since been toned down and the average weed now contains about 17 or 18 percent. This is more than twice as much as in the 1990s, though, when cannabis contained about 8.5 percent of THC. So a lot has changed over the years. But then again, what is the strongest weed in the Netherlands?
What is the strongest weed in the Netherlands?
Of course, as mentioned earlier, the world of breeders continues to evolve, and therefore the answer to this question can change just like that. Currently, however, Amnesia Haze is considered the strongest weed in the Netherlands. This cannabis strain is a result of multiple crosses and developments over time. Amnesia Haze usually consists of about three-quarters sativa and about a quarter indica. The THC content in this cannabis strain goes over 20 percent. To compare this briefly with other weed varieties, they are on average at a THC content of about 15 percent.
