Coffeeshop Amsterdam: Utrechtsestraat

Looking for a coffeeshop in the heart of Amsterdam? Then you must visit Coffeeshop Hunter’s. We’ve been around for over 35 years and have become a well-known name in the city. Many people recognize our logo with the dog. Out of our six locations, you’re most likely to have seen the one on Utrechtsestraat. Located in central Amsterdam, near the Herengracht, this is one of our most popular branches. Interested? After reading this page, you’ll be well-prepared for a visit.

What is a Coffeeshop?

A coffeeshop is a place where you can legally buy cannabis products. Common examples include weed and hash. Most coffeeshops sell these products in various forms. Think joints for smoking weed or hash, but also cookies or brownies with cannabis. This way, everyone can consume cannabis according to their preference.

A Meeting Place

Additionally, for many people, the coffeeshop is a meeting place. Coffeeshop Hunter’s is known for its relaxed and friendly atmosphere. It’s ideal for meeting new people or catching up with friends. However, whether you can consume the products on-site varies by coffeeshop. At the Hunter’s coffeeshop on Utrechtsestraat, we even have a special Hunter’s Bar. It’s fully set up to enjoy our products with a snack and/or drink. More about that later on this page.

Why Visit a Coffeeshop?

The reasons to visit a coffeeshop can differ for everyone. Here are five possible reasons for a visit.

Cannabis Use

Firstly, people visit a coffeeshop to use cannabis. This plant species is known for its psychoactive properties, meaning it can affect the nervous system. Often, this leads to changes in mood, consciousness, or behavior. The most common psychoactive effects of cannabis include giddiness, relaxation, increased appetite, impaired coordination, euphoria, and altered social interaction. You can imagine this isn’t just an interesting experience, but often a pleasant one too.

Medicinal Use

Did you know cannabis can also be used medicinally? It’s known to help reduce pain, depressive symptoms, nausea, sleep problems, and inflammation. Many people use cannabis in oil form for medicinal purposes. There’s also a distinction between CBD and THC, two well-known cannabinoids found in cannabis. THC provides psychoactive effects, pain relief, and increased appetite, while CBD is mainly anti-inflammatory and promotes sleep. Your personal situation will determine which cannabinoid might help you. It’s always advisable to seek professional help.

Relaxation

Another reason for a coffeeshop visit is relaxation. This isn’t just caused by using cannabis products but also by the music, lighting, decor, and other people. It’s the perfect place to unwind after a busy day.

Social Interaction

Coffeeshops are great for social interaction. The relaxed atmosphere makes people more likely to strike up conversations. Cannabis use often enhances the desire for social interaction, making visitors more open to chatting.

Education

New to the world of cannabis? That’s another good reason to visit a coffeeshop. The staff can offer plenty of tips to help you start safely and enjoyably. They’re happy to advise you on product types, dosages, and usage.

Local Culture

Are you a tourist? A coffeeshop visit can be worth it. It’s a great way to explore local culture. Since the Netherlands is one of the few European countries where cannabis use is legal, many tourists take the opportunity to try it.

Coffeeshop Amsterdam: Other Locations

As mentioned, Hunter’s Coffeeshop is now a well-known name in Amsterdam. We have four locations in the city and have expanded to two other cities. Here’s an overview of all our locations.

Amsterdam-Centrum

Our location at Utrechtsestraat 14 is near the Herengracht and just 100 meters from Rembrandtplein, making it ideal to combine a coffeeshop visit with a trip to the city center. The Hunter’s Bar is right next to the coffeeshop.

Amsterdam-Noord; Waterlandplein

Located at Waterlandplein 7 in Amsterdam-Noord, this spot is great for a night out with all the eateries around.

Amsterdam-Noord; Papaverweg

Besides our location at Waterlandplein, we also have a spot at Papaverweg 2 in Amsterdam-Noord. This area is less touristy, so you’ll mostly find local visitors here.

Amsterdam-West

We also have a branch in Amsterdam-West, at Orteliusstraat 193. Coming by public transport? Get off at Mercatorplein and walk to the shop in two minutes.

Haarlem

As mentioned, we’ve expanded to other cities too. The first is Haarlem. In the capital of North Holland, a Hunter’s Coffeeshop couldn’t be missing. The shop attracts many local visitors, but tourists find their way there too. Located at Schoterweg 66, a visit to the shop is perfect to combine with a day in Haarlem.

Zandvoort

We’ve also staked our claim on the coast. Our sixth branch is at Stationsstraat 9-11 in Zandvoort. The city attracts tens of thousands of beachgoers each year, many of whom love visiting our shop. Not just locals, but tourists from home and abroad. Did you know Zandvoort regularly hosts major events? You can imagine the shop gets extra visitors during these times. The shop is easy to reach by public transport. After leaving the train station, you’ll be at our shop in three minutes.

Awareness

When using cannabis, awareness and knowledge are crucial. Cannabis can have many side effects that can lead to serious consequences if misused. For example, driving shortly after using cannabis is illegal. It’s even recommended not to drive for 24 hours after use. While Hunter’s Coffeeshop staff are trained to advise visitors, using cannabis is always your responsibility. Always do your research and be cautious, especially if you’re a beginner.

Possible Effects

Cannabis use can lead to multiple effects. Here are three common ones.

Drowsiness

Cannabis use often leads to drowsiness. The degree of this depends on dosage, gender, weight, mental state, and environment. While drowsiness can be pleasant if you use cannabis before sleeping, it’s not if you have plans afterward. Always consider what you have planned in the next few hours before using cannabis. Driving is strictly forbidden after cannabis use.

Increased Appetite

Another common effect of cannabis is increased appetite. This can lead to overeating, with weight gain and digestive issues as possible consequences. Many people tend to reach for unhealthy food in such situations. Luckily, the Hunter’s Bar also offers healthy snacks.

Changes in Emotions

Cannabis use can change your emotions. This can vary by moment, product, dosage, and person. One person might feel euphoric, creative, and/or relaxed, while another might feel anxious and/or paranoid. Especially for inexperienced users, it’s advisable to start with small doses to prevent the effect from becoming too strong and leading to a negative or even dangerous experience.

Tips for Beginners

Are you a beginner cannabis user? Then it’s especially important to be cautious. Here are four tips to help every beginner have a safe and enjoyable cannabis experience.

Be Patient

Have you used cannabis but don’t feel any effect yet? That’s not unusual. For inhalation, the peak effect is only after 20 minutes. For edibles, it takes even longer, usually starting after 30 minutes with a peak after 1 to 3 hours. So after your first intake, wait patiently until you feel the effect to avoid taking too much.

Start Pure

We also recommend that beginners start with pure cannabis. Think pure smoking or oil. This way, you have more control over the dosage than when you mix it with tobacco or other products. These additives, like tobacco, are often harmful to your health and addictive.

Experiment with a Vaporizer

Want to start really safely? Experiment with a vaporizer. This device allows you to vaporize cannabis. When you inhale the vapor, you get a very low dose of cannabis, making it a safe and easy way to experience its effects.

Ask for Help

For beginners, it’s also very valuable to start with an experienced user. They can guide you responsibly and give you tips. Plus, it’s always more fun to use cannabis together than alone. Don’t know anyone to help you? Drop by the shop, and you’ll likely meet new people who are happy to assist.

Ready for a Visit?

With this knowledge, you’re well-prepared for a visit to our shop. Our staff is ready to help you choose the right product and/or how to use it. We’re open Monday to Sunday from 7:00 AM to 12:00 AM, and you can find us at Utrechtsestraat 14. Want to start off right? Feel free to visit our Hunter’s Bar next door at Utrechtsestraat 18.
