How to make Cannabutter | A Step-by-Step Guide

Cannabis butter or commonly known as Cannabutter is a great ingredient for people who rely on edibles to experience the psychoactive effects of cannabis. From cakes to cookies, cannabis butter can be added to nearly everything. Time to wake your inner baker!

Step 1: Decarboxylation

First and foremost, you must decarboxylate the weed. This process, also recognized as “decarbing,” entails baking your cannabis to unlock the THC, CBD, as well as other cannabinoids. It also helps lipids in oil and butter to quickly adhere to your cannabis for the best infusion. Decarboxylation also ensures that the butter doesn’t adopt the green color from the herbs. It also significantly reduces the cooking time. All you have to do is spread your herbs on an oven-friendly tray and bake it at 240 degrees for 40 minutes.

Step 2: Melt the butter

Add water and butter to a saucepan and heat it on low or medium heat, as butter can be easily burnt. Make sure the butter doesn’t get too dark but beautifully golden brown.

Step 3: Add the cannabis

While your butter melts, grind your decarboxylated cannabis herbs so that they get refined. Add it to the melted butter. 


Step 4: Stir it up!

Keep stirring to make sure that the butter doesn’t overcook or burn. It is recommended that the temperature doesn’t cross 180 degrees. Stir for around 30 minutes.

Step 5: Let it simmer

Cook the mixture on low heat for around 4 hours. In this part of the process the THC (and other cannabinoids) will be released in the butter.

Step 6: Strain

Let it cool and use a cheesecloth to strain the butter. Make sure that no amount of butter remains. Because of the fact we only can press every single drop out of the mixture while it’s still warm, make sure you don’t burn yourself.

Note: Warm butter is still fluid, it doesn’t have to be extremely hot. So let it cool for a little while first😉

Step 7: Serve or preserve

Let the cannabis butter sit in the fridge or freezer to cool down. It’s ready for immediate use and can be stored for up to 6 months in an air-tight container or a mason jar.

Things to remember

  1. Do not overcook or burn the butter. The temperature on which you cook determines the end result of your Cannabutter cooking adventure. Don’t let it exceed 180 degrees.
  2. Use only pure and authentic butter. Other counterfeit kinds of butter tend to be low quality which won’t blend in with the cannabis as smoothly. 
  3. Track your dosage. Edibles can be highly potent, especially when they’re decarboxylated. They are also difficult when it comes to dosing as compared to vapes or other cannabis products. 10 mg is standard. Remember, edibles are slow when it comes to producing effects. Wait for 40 minutes or an hour to determine if the dose is adequate for you. The key is to observe how it makes your body feel, whether you need more or less, and most importantly if If you’re enjoying yourself or not
